What is Cellulite and How is it Treated?
![]() |
If you would ask what would be one of the common struggles many women have to face, it would be the struggle with cellulite. Once upon a time, this problem was associated with being overweight. Today, we know that everyone is susceptible to this issue, even athletes who are at their ideal body weight. The problem occurs when fat cells located under the septae expand and stretch out the connective tissue that covers them. This connective tissue becomes hard while the fat surrounding the tissue gets bigger due to water weight. The hard connective tissue and expanding fat causes the skin to take on an orange peel or cottage cheese appearance.
There are a variety of factors that are thought to cause or encourage the formation of this type of fat. One common cause is aging. The older you get, the more likely you are to develop this condition. Many women develop these dimpled deposits of fat during middle age, while others notice it much earlier. As early as puberty, the skin can thin and the appearance of fat under the skin can become more prominent. Another potential cause is one's level of activity, or lack thereof. The more you exercise, the less likely you are to suffer from this problem. This is because exercise burns fat and improves the circulation. There are many different theories regarding the causes but no definitive answers. Some experts think other causes include genetics, obesity, stress, alcohol consumption, and smoking.
While men are not exempt from this problem, most sufferers are women. The most common parts of the body to be afflicted are the hips, thighs and buttocks. Now that you know why this issue occurs, you probably want to know how to get rid of it. Just as there are many potential causes of this type of fat, there are many different treatment options. It's important to understand that while it's possible to reduce the lumpy appearance, it's very difficult to eliminate it completely.
Exercise is one of the best ways to fight cellulite. As mentioned before, exercise helps your body burn fat and improves blood flow. Drinking plenty of water before, during and after working out is crucial to keep your body hydrated and assist in the reduction of excess fat. There are also a wide variety of creams and gels on the market that claim to promote a smoother appearance. Some people swear by body wraps and saunas when it comes to fighting this unsightly problem. To increase your chances of success, try combining exercise and a healthy diet with other remedies of your choosing like wraps, saunas and topical products.
